Lucinda, a young girl who somehow survived abandonment at Red Rock Canyon.

Image
Lucinda is not ready for adoption yet, but she is now safe and we want to share her story with you.  A man and his daughter were hiking today in the Calico Basin of Red Rock Canyon and she came out of a bush and crawled to them, desperate for help.  Lucinda is skin & bones and weak from dehydration. It's remarkable that she somehow survived the coyotes.  She is a chocolate & white Lop bunny, less than a year of age, and being a domesticated rabbit she relies on humans for survival and had no chance on her own.  We will get Lucinda back to good health and then get her spayed and ready for adoption.

Empress, a rescued Collie recovering from starvation.

Image
Empress is an exceptionally gentle girl debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA. She is a Collie with majestic beauty, approximately 6 years of age and spayed, and compatible with most dogs. At the time of rescue earlier this summer Empress was emaciated from starvation.  Her previous owner said he and Empress were living on the streets out of a shopping cart and he couldn't feed her. Empress has since been steadily regaining weight and energy, plus we had her teeth cleaned. Please help us find her a very loving, stable, forever home.

If I give you all of my unconditional love, will you keep me safe?

Some of us think Travis has cartoon-cute eyes.  While others of us believe his eyes reflect the hardships this youngster has already endured.  At the time of rescue Travis was at another shelter, emaciated from starvation and suffering from a broken tooth.  We had his tooth removed and he is slowly, steadily regaining weight and energy.  Travis is a very affectionate Miniature Pinscher, 1 year of age, neutered boy, debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA.  Travis adores people and gets along well with other dogs.  Please ask for him by name when you visit.

Godiva, rescued from starvation, needs a foster home and hero.

Image
A foster home and foster hero needed please.  Godiva has wonderfully gained almost 6 pounds since this photo was taken on the day of her rescue a couple of weeks ago! She has been hospitalized since then, getting IV fluids.  Her blood tests have been encouraging, despite her diabetes.  Because of her progress and her insulin levels are now stable with twice-daily shots, the veterinarians say Godiva is now ready for a foster home to continue her recovery.  Godiva needs to safely and steadily gain an additional 15 pounds or so before she is ready for adoption.  She is an incredibly sweet Bully mix, 1 year of age, and her tail always wagged when we sat with her and comforted her, even when she was too weak to want to lift her head. If you can foster Godiva for several weeks and give her insulin shots, please visit Nevada SPCA before 4pm and ask for DJ at the front desk.

Will you please help me continue realizing my full loving potential?

This gorgeous little lady was just skin & bones a few months ago when she was rescued from an extremely busy parkway in Las Vegas.  She was emaciated from starvation.  We named her Molly and placed her in a loving foster home for nurturing care and recovery.  Molly has made spectacular improvement during the months and she is now spayed and debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA.  She is a Longhair Chihuahua & Dachshund mix, about 5 years of age, and great with other dogs.  Molly craves affection and delights in sitting in your lap peacefully.  Her foster mom, Barb, has done wonders for Molly , and now she needs your help in finding someone amazing who will give her a forever home where she never misses a meal again.

Promise to shield me from evil, hunger, and despair.

Lindsey's wise eyes also reveal great warmth.  Her face is still gaunt from starvation/emaciation, but she is steadily regaining weight and spirit now that she is eating premium, probiotic food.  Lindsey's history is mostly unknown.  She was a stray on the streets captured by an animal control officer who took her to a government-funded shelter.  That shelter asked for Nevada SPCA's help because she was so severely underweight.  Lindsey is a medium-size Retriever mix, about 4 years of age, spayed girl, debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA.  We want this sweetheart to never know hunger or loneliness again.

Clover, a starving German Shorthair Pointer, rescued today and needs prayers.

Image
Update on March 16: Major developments today with Clover, including the discovery that his condition is not the result of cruelty but the hardening of his small intestine walls from suspected cancer.  Clover is still alive and receiving treatment, and he had positive developments today.  Here's more detail: We were elated this morning that Clover survived the night.  A young girl brought him a soft unicorn-themed blanket and he enjoyed resting on it throughout the day. By early afternoon, following continued regular eating and fluids, Clover was very alert and wanting to stand up.  We took him in the courtyard for some sunshine and he began slowly trotting around to explore. Mid-afternoon, we received a tip that he may be the same missing dog who was receiving treatment from a local veterinary clinic for cancer of the small intestine.  The veterinary clinics shared medical information with each other and determined that Clover was indeed the missing do...

I feel revitailzed!

It is so gratifying to see Heather's fantastic recovery and she happily debuts for adoption today at Nevada SPCA.  She is an outgoing, personable Shar Pei mix with blue-grey & white coloring, 2 years young and spayed.  At the time of rescue Heather was emaciated from starvation and her lower eyelids folded inward painfully scratching her eyes (a condition called entropion).  But now, after many weeks of recovery, she has gained weight and a zest for life.  Her entropion surgery was a success and the scarring under her eyes is minimal.  Heather is ready for a loving, forever home full of laughs and smiles and attention, hopefully never knowing dangerous hunger again.

Manny's triumphant debut for adoption!

Image
Manny is an angelic puppy with the cutest deer-like appearance and bubbly personality.  He is a German Shepherd, about 10 months of age, neutered, and full of love.  At the time of rescue weeks ago he was dangerously malnourished. But he is responding well with pancreatic enzyme substitutes (sprinkled on his food) for a pancreatic insufficiency. German Shepherd knowledge is strongly preferred for Manny's adoption.

Lionheart's Triumph!!

Image
Lionheart, picture 1 - upon full recovery Lionheart, picture 2 - upon full recovery Lionheart, picture 3 - after rescue, at veterinary hospital Lionheart, picture 4 - after rescue, at veterinary hospital We were elated when this angel had the light back in his eyes, when he could hold up his head on his own, and when his tail began to wag.  The victim of extreme starvation, at the time of rescue his life was in imminent peril.  After a week of emergency hospitalization care and fluids, and months of subsequent recovery at Nevada SPCA (www.nevadaspca.org), the boy we named Lionheart nearly tripled his weight and bloomed into a social, cheerful boy full of joy and curiosity.  Lionheart is a Yorkshire Terrier mix, neutered, 5 years of age, debuting for adoption today.  CAUTION : His "before" pictures are very disturbing.  But we want to share Lionheart's success with you and ask for your help in finding him a loving, forever home.

My near-starvation is becoming just a distant memory now.

We rescued Heathrow from a city park known for a large coyote population.  He was emaciated and starving. Domesticated bunnies cannot survive on their own, yet they are released in countless numbers into parks and golf courses when they are no longer wanted, perishing to the elements or becoming an easy meal to a coyote or bird of prey. Heathrow is one of the lucky ones to have survived such reckless treatment and he is now in the safety of Nevada SPCA.  But he needs a loving, forever home of his own. Heathrow is an American breed rabbit, neutered boy, 1 year of age.  He is well-behaved and very sweet and handsome. June is Adopt-A-Lovebug month at Nevada SPCA, so his adoption fee has been reduced to $20 (from $35) and he is ready for adoption today.   Please visit and ask for him by name.

I don't want to ever know starvation again. Please.

A real estate agent found this petite, sweet girl in a foreclosed home.  She was starving and emaciated, as no water or food was in sight.  We named her Sky and nursed her back to good health.  She is now ready for share her devotion with someone worthy of her innocence and love. Sky is a lovely dilute calico, now spayed, 3 years of age.  Please ask for her by name in the Cat Condos.

I am so exuberant because life is starting for me anew.

At the time of rescue Dakota Dan was emaciated, in a state of starvation indicating weeks, perhaps months, of extreme neglect and food deprivation. But now the spark is back in his eyes and he has a new spring in his step! This fun-loving boy is overwhelmed with joy now that he feels good again, thanks to loving care. Dakota Dan is a handsome Shepherd mix (perhaps Dutch Shepherd mix), neutered, about 5 years of age, debuting triumphantly today for adoption. He is great with other dogs and he is reportedly fine with children.  We recommend basic dog obedience training to help him channel his energy into good behavior. Please cherish Dakota Dan every day and protect him from ever having to go hungry again.

Do I dare allow myself to be hopeful again?

Update: Lucy was adopted on January 15th! Lucy was the victim of starvation. Her previous owner said he left her with one of his son's friends to care for her when he moved away, but when he returned five months later she was skeletal from extreme neglect. We are glad to have Lucy here for her physical and emotional recovery, and so that we can find her a compassionate new owner who will never let her experience the horror of starvation and abandonment again. Lucy debuts for adoption today.  She is a lovely Boxer mix, brindle and white, spayed, and approximately 5 years of age.  She is reportedly housetrained and compatible with dogs and mature kids. Her recovery will need to continue in her new home.  Please note that she was so traumatized from her starvation -- her spirit was as limp as her body -- that she refused to eat dog food despite being so hungry.  We lured her back to eating with human food, which she just could not resist.  A variety o...

Please make sure I never go hungry again.

Update: Margie was adopted on December 31st! The gleam and sparkle are returning to Margie's eyes. She is feeling better, valiantly recovering from near starvation.  She is still quite thin, so she needs to continue gaining weight in a new home. We rescued Margie from another shelter.  She had been taken there by an officer who found her emaciated body in the field. Margie is a Yorkshire Terrier, spayed girl, approximately 4 years of age, debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA. She is great with other dogs and needs regular professional grooming care. She is a sweetheart, but as Margie is feeling better a feisty side is emerging too, so an experienced home is required (without young children).

Tender loving care has helped me feel like a princess.

Update: Claudia was adopted on December 22nd! This angel was roaming the streets, starving, apparently on her own for some time due to her extremely emaciated condition at the time of rescue.  She was terrified and it looked like we could see every bone in her fragile body. We named her Claudia and placed her in a very loving foster home for the best of care.  Her foster mom cooked special meals for her and supplemented them with a vitamin gel that contains additional calories. As the weeks went by and she regained weight and energy, her personality began to blossom too, and she went from sulking and crawling to prancing around the house and engaging the other dogs there.   She also enjoys crawling under the covers and snuggling. Claudia is still timid with strangers, but very warm-hearted with those she knows and trusts. Today, she is ready for adoption into a forever home.  Claudia is a petite, lovely Chihuahua, spayed, about one year of age.  She ...

I loyally waited for several weeks for my loved ones to remember me.

Update: Gunner was adopted on November 19th! Abandoned in a foreclosed home, Gunner had nothing to do for weeks on end but try to forget about his hunger and wonder when his previous family would return to save him from starvation. Of course, they never came.  But a caring neighbor stepped up to help him and get him into a rescue program. Gunner is making a slow, steady recovery, and this progress will need to continue in his new home.  Traumatized by the abandonment, isolation, and starvation, his eyes were dulled with that glazed, heartbreaking look that we see so often. He is a soulful, good-looking Chesapeake Bay Retriever with a handsome, wavy coat the breed is famous for.  He is neutered, approximately 3 years of age, and debuting for adoption today. Gunner is fine with some dogs, but be sure to bring your current dog(s) to meet him in our adoption courtyard to ensure he is compatible with the whole family. Please adopt Gunner and show him that humans...

Desperate hunger is behind me now. I want to join a family.

Update: Counter was adopted on October 16th! Counter is a fun-loving youngster with a sunny disposition. His spirit has lightened and relaxed now that his health is back and strong. Counter's foster mom saved him from starvation on the streets, helping him recover from the weakness and utter despair that sets in the late stages of food deprivation. With every pound regained, his exuberance grew too.  She named him Counter because he began "counter surfing" -- jumping on her counters with a smile on his face searching for an extra bite of food. Counter is eager to please, so we believe he will respond beautifully to basic dog training.   This will help him channel his newfound energy into good behaviors. He is a handsome Labrador Retriever, neutered male, 2 years of age, and he is compatible with dogs and kind children.  He debuts for adoption today and he would love to spend time with you in our adoption courtyard.  Please visit and ask for him by name....

Please make sure I never experience starvation again.

Update: Armondo was adopted on October 2nd! Armondo is gaining weight, slowly and steadily, and regaining energy. It turns out he has a jazzy, social personality. We rescued Armondo from another shelter. He was severely undernourished and they asked for our assistance in order to give him special care. He is a loving, handsome Chihuahua, neutered male, 4 years of age, debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA. Armondo is great with other dogs and probably will do best in a home with another dog or two. He will need to continue gaining weight in his new home. Please be willing and able to provide him with a variety of foods and treats that will help him remain interested in food.

Please do not let me ever go hungry again.

Update: Cuddles was adopted on August 17th! Cuddles is an innocent, humble, adorable boy for adoption today at Nevada SPCA. He is a Wire-haired Dachshund, neutered, 4 years of age. Cuddles has a quiet spirit. New people and loud people make him anxious, but he warms up beautifully with those he trusts. We rescued Cuddles from another shelter that had run out of room to keep him. He is compatible with other dogs, but please note he exhibits some food aggression, most likely due to having experienced starvation. This behavior can be corrected with time and patience, but in the short-term he should be fed separately from any other dogs. Please visit Nevada SPCA and ask for Cuddles by name.
