Before & After -- two young Shih-Tzus recovering from extreme neglect.

Image
Marie & Mark, after being shaved down on June 7. Marie, on the day of her rescue, June 6. Mark, on the day of his rescue, June 6. Marie & Mark are not yet ready for adoption, but these angels are on the road to recovery from extreme neglect. They were thrown over a fence into someone's yard.  Fortunately, they did not end up with broken legs or other bones from the fall.  (If we determine the identity of their previous owners, we will, of course, be giving that information to authorities for animal abuse prosecution.) Their matting was so severe and filthy they could barely see.  This is neglect that has likely taken place over their entire lives.  We doubt they have ever been groomed or pampered until they arrived at Nevada SPCA. Marie is afraid of women, but she is letting men handle and give her nurturing care.  Mark is very bashful, but a bit more trusting of both women and men. Special thanks to all of you who donate to Neva...

Do pet portraits get any cuter than this??!

Tinkerbell & Peter Pan .  They are a sister and brother team with wonderfully light-hearted natures and loving personalities.  Pet'ographique captured these matinee idols in a portrait that rings true with their fun attitudes.  Tinkerbell & Peter Pan are Shih-Tzus, 2 years young, spayed/neutered, great with other dogs, and ready for adoption at Nevada SPCA (www.nevadaspca.org).  They are soul-mates, so they need to remain together forever. We rescued the pair from another shelter.

Why did they mess with perfection?

Wisteria was naturally perfect, the way God intended her, yet someone dyed her ears and tail purple. It's a real shame because it will take months for the dye to come out.  Worse, her previous owner was breeding her for puppies and she was found with no sign of responsible ownership (no tags or microchip ID).  Wisteria deserves better, and with your help we'll find her an amazing home.  Wisteria is a Maltese & Shih-Tzu mix, spayed girl, about 4 years of age, good with dogs, debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA.

Why was I deemed less important than the books and furniture?

Update: Becky was adopted on November 11th! Based on the animals being harmed and abandoned, the foreclosure crisis seems to be worsening. Becky is yet another innocent angel who was trapped inside a foreclosed home for weeks on end without food or care or human contact.  She would have perished if not rescued by a neighbor, who then brought her to us. Besides the physical toll, the emotional trauma of abandonment is just as real.  Becky is settling down and regaining her self-esteem, but her eyes reveal great anxiety and confusion. She is a gorgeous young Shih-Tzu with a gentle spirit.  We had her spayed, micro-chipped, and vaccinated.  She is just a year of age and debuting for adoption today. Becky likes other dogs and she needs regular professional grooming care. Please come meet this precious girl and reassure her that you will love her and keep her safe, forever.

I think you will fall in love with my dancing.

Update: Frederico was adopted on October 29th! If you detest doggie kisses, then Frederico is not the right match for you. This affectionate, silly, entertaining boy loves to sneak in licks and kisses, and wow you with his standing dances where he swims in the air with his front paws. Frederico is a charming Shih-Tzu & Maltese mix, neutered, about 3 years young. We rescued him from another shelter. Frederico enjoys other friendly dogs and needs regular professional grooming care.  Please meet and adopt him today.

Being blind does not stop me from being a loving companion.

Update: Ray was adopted on October 23rd! Ray is an enthusiastic little trooper. He is a Shih-Tzu, neutered male, about 8 years of age, debuting for adoption today. At the time of rescue he was near a busy intersection, in extreme danger of being struck by a vehicle.  It was evident he was blind and suffering from a very severe ear infection that had him tilting his head sideways. We had his ear infection treated and he recovered well.  While Ray gently bumps furniture and other obstacles as he learns new spaces, he needs you to speak to him before touching him.  Otherwise, he can get agitated and anxious, so an adult-only home is required. Ray seems to do best with other dogs around, or a person who can be with him most of the time, so he doesn't feel lost and disoriented.  If you have stairs or a pool at your home, they will need to be gated (baby-gate or other obstacle) for his safety and protection. Ray has tremendous loving potential.  Please ...

If you loved me, you would still want me after I was spayed.

Update: Rita was adopted on October 30th! This precious Shih-Tzu puppy was found roaming the streets, lost and in danger of being struck by a vehicle. Her previous owner failed to have her identified with a collar and a tag or a microchip ID.  A possible previous owner inquired about her, but once he realized we had her spayed he no longer showed interest in reclaiming her. We named her Rita and, indeed, her spaying assures that she will not be exploited by a backyard breeder to make a quick buck off of her puppies.  Instead, we seek a loving, committed owner who will love her for who she is, not for her commercial value. Rita is 9 months of age, compatible with other sweet dogs, and debuting for adoption today.  Please plan on regular professional grooming care for her and budget extra accordingly.  (We suggest at least quarterly groomings.) As always, we want to take the opportunity to remind you to carefully puppy-proof your home and yard for her safet...

I have gotten away with being moody . . . until now.

Update: Brick was adopted on October 29th! Brick is a dashing youngster with tremendous loving potential. Generally, he is jolly, but occasionally he is testy. We have no reports of him biting.  His previous owner said he may get nippy though when he is moody in order to communicate with you.  Of course, this is not acceptable communication, and so an experienced, adult-only home is strictly required for him. Brick is a Shih-Tzu, neutered male, just a year of age, and he debuts for adoption today. He is compatible with other dogs and needs regular brushing and grooming care. Brick is reportedly only partially housetrained, due to not being kept on a regular routine, so he will need your patience and good guidance to complete housetraining. He needed us due to his previous owner's financial hardship.

I am one of 6 Shih-Tzus who became homeless when our owner died.

Update: Tommy was adopted on November 1st! Tommy's charm emanates from his easy-going nature and innocent spirit. He is a handsome Shih-Tzu, neutered male, about 4 years of age, debuting for adoption today. Tommy is great with other sweet dogs and needs regular professional grooming care. We rescued him and 5 other Shih-Tzus from another shelter.  They had been taken there when their previous owner passed away, and unfortunately, all 6 needed dental work and grooming.  We have provided this care for them -- Tommy had a dental cleaning and 8 extractions -- and they are becoming available as their adoption preparation is completed. A quick note on dental decay.  This varies with each dog, of course, but we usually do not see this much tooth decay on young dogs unless they are eating a bulk of tablescraps instead of their dog food.  This is our speculation for these six, but we have no way of knowing what their lifestyle was previously like.  So, please...

Will you be my new mommy?

Update: Deitra was adopted on October 22nd! Deitra's previous owner passed away. Apparently no plans had been made for Deitra in the event of an emergency and she was taken to a government shelter.  When that shelter ran out of space to keep her, we rescued her, and today she debuts for adoption at Nevada SPCA. Deitra has a sparkling personality.   Unless you have a heart of ice, we guarantee this little lady will charm you. She is a Shih-Tzu, spayed, approximately 7 years of age, good with other sweet dogs.  We had a dental cleaning done for her after the rescue. Deitra needs regular professional grooming care, so please budget extra accordingly.

Our mommy valiantly kept us alive in an abandoned apartment.

Update 3: Spike was adopted on October 13th! Update 2: Gizmo and Mowgli were adopted on October 4th!  Update: Furbie was adopted on October 2nd! Grace's Angels debut for adoption today at Nevada SPCA. Spike (left) and his sisters Gizmo and Furbie just could not be any cuter.  These tiny puppies are exceptionally sweet and loving, friendly, and adventurous. Grace , aptly named for her gentle nature, a beautiful blend of Chihuahua and Shih-Tzu and Papillon, had been abandoned by her previous owner, left behind in an apartment that had no furniture or air-conditioning -- and this was in the very hot month of July! Further, Grace was trying to keep her four hungry puppies alive too.  At the time of rescue, her babies were only 2 weeks of age. All kennels were full here at the headquarters, so we made a comfortable place for Grace and her babies in the director's office. Grace proved to be a terrific mother and we carefully socialized her puppies with cats ...

I have unconditional love for you in exchange for a lifelong home.

Update: Mikey was adopted on September 25th! Mikey is a wonderful youngster debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA. He is an endearing, charming boy , a Shih-Tzu mix, neutered, just a year of age. We rescued Mikey from another shelter. The background information was very limited, but indicated he was fine with kind children and dogs, and still needed help with housetraining. Mikey reportedly dashes out the front door, so please take extra precautions to keep him securely in your home and yard. Please also plan and budget for regular professional grooming care.

What happened to our mommy?

Update: Stephanie and Springer were adopted on October 29th! These very sweet girls have an amazing bond. Stephanie , the Terrier mix on the right, likes to keep an eye on Springer at all times. They needed us when their owner died. The deceased's mother failed to comfort them and instead threatened to abandon them in the desert. Stephanie is a Terrier mix and Springer is a Shih-Tzu mix. Both girls are spayed, about 4-5 years of age, and need regular grooming care. Despite being confused about what happened to their previous mom, the girls are doing fairly well, secure in that they still have each other. Please be sure to keep them together forever. They are soul-mates.

They took the furniture, but left me behind.

Update: Nextel was adopted on September 4th! Nextel cherishes being held and reassured. He wants to know that you love him and will keep him safe. He is a darling puppy with a colorful personality, a Shih-Tzu mix, neutered male, about 10-11 months of age, and he debuts for adoption today. Nextel needed us when his previous owners moved away without him. Besides enjoying other dogs, he is reportedly fine with mature, older kids and housetrained too. He may be compatible with cats, but he likes to bark at them to initiate playing. Please plan on regular grooming care for Nextel and budget extra accordingly.

Is it a big surprise that a dog like me barks?

Update: Poppy was adopted on August 28th! Brace yourself for the superb charm of little Poppy . He is a silly, light-hearted older boy who is ready to share fun and good cheer. Poppy is a precious Shih-Tzu, neutered, 9-10 years of age, debuting for adoption today. Besides being super cute, he is well-behaved, good with small dogs (big dogs frighten him), and reportedly compatible with mature kids, plus housetrained too (with a doggie door). Please plan on regular professional grooming care for Poppy and budget accordingly. The reason he was surrendered to us by his previous owner? He "barks". So, yes, little Poppy barks and eats and sleeps and goes to the bathroom, as expected of any and all canines. Please adopt this sweetheart and show him the power of love and commitment.

Perhaps I require some extra care, but I dare say I am worth it.

Trevor has a dry eye condition that requires daily eye drops to help him produce tears. He was at another shelter but repeatedly overlooked due to his eyes, so we were asked to take him. Dry eye is fairly common and requires a daily routine that involves some cleaning and eye drops, but this is not difficult to do, nor time-consuming. Trevor is a warm-hearted, casual boy who prefers an easy-going lifestyle and he likes other sweet dogs. He is a Shih-Tzu, neutered male, 7 years of age, debuting today for Nevada SPCA. Besides his eye care, please plan on regular grooming care for Trevor .

Perhaps I am moody, but I still have enormous love to share.

Failed by those he loved and trusted, over and over, maybe it is easier to understand why Scallion occasionally gets moody with people. He just may not want to put up with any more nonsense or rejection. We rescued Scallion from another shelter, so we are not sure of his background, but we think our speculation is pretty accurate. Scallion is a good-looking Shih-Tzu, neutered male, at least 7 years of age. Because he is temperamental, to err on the safe side (for dog bite prevention), he strictly requires an experienced, adult-only home. Scallion enjoys other dogs and needs regular grooming care. Please adopt him and pleasantly surprise him that humans are capable of making lifetime commitments to those they love.

I need to be able to count on you for a forever home.

Update: Dido was adopted on July 23rd! Two of the most striking things about Dido are his very expressive eyes. He is a sensitive youngster and, while generally playful, he has a gentle temperament. Dido is reportedly a Jack Russell Terrier & Shih-Tzu mix. He is neutered and about 3 years of age. He reportedly likes to play fetch. Besides being good with other dogs, he is reportedly compatible with older, mature kids, and housetrained and crate-trained. Dido needed us when his previous owner moved away without him. Dido debuts for adoption today.

How could they use me like a machine?

Update: Maxine was adopted on July 12th! Innocent little Maxine is a humble, sweet, gentle girl. But she was ravaged by the dog breeding industry, exploited by greed and denied the proper care and socialization she needed and deserved. We rescued her from a puppy mill. And for many months now we have been providing medical care to her so that this special day could arrive -- the day she debuts for adoption. Maxine is a Shih-Tzu, 4 years of age. She is now spayed and awaiting the discovery of what true love and commitment from a human will mean to her life. Maxine likes other friendly dogs and she needs regular professional grooming care. Never in a loving home before, she requires your great patience and good guidance to complete housetraining and adjust to living predominantly indoors as a cherished member of the family. Maxine has come a very long way medically. We had her mammary tumors removed and treated her chronic ear infections. But she still needs daily medication and ...

Please budget extra for our regular professional grooming care.

Update: Nitro & Harry were adopted on July 8th! Nitro & Harry are adorable, precious baby boys who needed us because of their previous owner's declining health. The brothers are Shih-Tzus, cute as can be, neutered, and approximately 7 months of age. We generally do not require that puppies be adopted together. But Nitro & Harry are very strongly bonded, so they need to remain together forever. Please carefully puppy-proof your home and yard for their safety and protection. Nitro & Harry enjoy other friendly dogs and they are reportedly compatible with gentle, mature children. Nitro & Harry debut for adoption today.
