Toby's triumphant recovery!

Image
Toby has healed wonderfully and he's making strong progress emotionally too, so we're very proud of this valiant young boy.  Toby is an African Spurred Tortoise, a teenager with a human-like lifespan, triumphantly debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA.  At the time of rescue Toby's front right arm was deadened from being tangled in a mesh band (from sod grass), which acted like a rubber-band in cutting off circulation to his arm.  Thanks to loving foster care, Toby recovered well from the amputation and has learned to not just walk, but even run!, using his new epoxy resin stilt.  We discovered he likes sitting beside cats too for companionship.  Toby is expected to grow in the years to come to well more than 100 pounds.  Please help us find a knowledgeable, committed home where Toby can spend decades being a valued member of the family.

Oso, a rescued Akita debuting for adoption.

No longer in pain, it has been wonderful to watch Oso's playful and friendly spirit emerge.  He loves to stand or sit leaning into you for reassurance and bonding.  Oso is a handsome Akita, about 5 years of age, neutered boy, debuting for adoption today at Nevada SPCA.  At the time of rescue his right eye was severely bulging and in danger of bursting, causing him great distress.  Akita knowledge is strongly preferred for his adoption.  Please help us find a hero for Oso .

My devotion knows no bounds.

Update: Faye was adopted on November 14th! Faye has adjusted well to life on three legs. This past spring she was struck by a car and her left front leg was crushed beyond repair. We rescued her and had emergency medical care provided to save her. Staff & volunteers fell in love with her, admiring her hearty spirit and quieter nature. Faye was adopted in June to an experienced home. Her new owner accepted that she can be fussy and likes things to be stable and consistent. But she was loyal to a fault, giving his male friends "the lip" when she was not pleased with them, and she even nipped one man's shoe. This protective behavior can be diminished with the help of a professional trainer or behaviorist. Please only consider her if you are fully committed to pursuing every reasonable opportunity to help her become a more well-balanced and well-adjusted girl. Faye is housetrained and good with cats and dogs. She is an Australian Shepherd mix, approximately 7 years...

Are you the special one for me?

Update: Cookie was adopted on July 18th! Like many puppies who have recovered from something devastating, Cookie is tentative, unsure whether the world is kind. She recently had a fragile hold on life. She was very sick with the deadly parvo virus and her owner refused emergency medical care needed to save her life. We rescued Cookie from certain death. Thanks to donations from members and supporters we had intensive care provided for her at the Dewey Veterinary Medical Center and she made a full recovery. This is a wondrous day for this baby girl. She is now ready for adoption at Nevada SPCA. She is a Spaniel mix, perhaps with Toy too, spayed, and approximately 5 months of age. We believe she will either stay small or grow only to medium size in adulthood. Cookie will do best in a gentle home. She adores other dogs, so a new big sister or big brother dog may help her adjust and feel welcome just that much faster. To all of you who support Nevada SPCA's rescue & rehabi...

I will not let anything slow me down.

Update: Jade was adopted on July 4th! Jade is a zippy puppy, full of energy and pizzazz. She loves life and wants to live it to the fullest. She has been well-socialized in a foster home with dogs, ferrets, and teenagers. She fits in well with groups and never wants to miss playtime. Jade is a Chihuahua mix, spayed female, approximately 5 months of age. She debuts for adoption today at Nevada SPCA. We rescued Jade and her brothers and sisters. But while her siblings were adopted right away, she needed foster care to rehabilitate two broken bones and a torn ligament in her right front leg. She recovered well, thanks to tender loving care. Her walk though is altered now. But her leg is fully functional and does not heed her activities. We believe Jade will do best in a home with other dogs. Please come meet her, and be sure to bring your resident dog to introduce to her too.

I will be loyal to you forever.

Update: Sedona was adopted on July 24th! Sedona is an intelligent, shy, and tender-hearted puppy. He is an Australian Cattle Dog, neutered male, approximately 7 months of age. Please be sure to puppy-proof your home & yard for his safety. Sedona had a broken leg when we rescued him. We had his leg repaired and he made a good recovery thanks to loving care in a foster home. Like many puppies, he "piddles" (releases small amounts of urine) when excited or anxious. This normally diminishes as puppies age and gain better control over their bladders (and, perhaps, emotions). This is involuntary so it is very important to never punish him for it. Herding dog knowledge and/or experience is preferred. Please visit and ask to meet Sedona today at Nevada SPCA.

We are healed and our futures are bright.

Update: Ernie, Tessa, and Todo were all adopted on or before May 27th! Tessa, and her brothers Ernie and Todo (on each side of her), are "The Blue Bully Puppies" and they are full of personality. They are as comical as they are precious, and as zany as they are adorable. They are also survivors. As newborns, they were in a home but contracted the deadly parvo virus. Their owner refused emergency medical care. We rescued them, but they were extremely ill, and some of their brothers and sisters perished. After extensive medical care, these three made a full recovery. Today, they debut in Adoptions at Nevada SPCA. They are approximately 3 months of age. They can be adopted separately, but please consider adopting a pair, or the trio, for lifelong companionship. They have been through so much already, so remaining together will provide them additional love and comfort, and may help them adapt to a new home that much easier.

Help me to love and trust people.

Update: Tina was adopted on May 28th! Tina is still a puppy at 11 months of age. She needs a gentle, nurturing person to show her that she is safe to believe in people again. She fell into the hands of a monster and was the victim of human rage (physical abuse and/or screaming). The monster did not crush her spirit though, and this angelic little girl is already showing emotional improvement. She has not bitten anyone, but we suspect she could be a fear-biter if put into a situation again that she perceives as being threatening, so an adult-only home is required for her. Tina is good with other dogs. She is a lovely steel-blue & white Chihuahua, spayed & vaccinated & micro-chipped, and ready for a hero to adopt her today.

Healed with tons of love.

Update: Augustus was adopted on June 26th! For the vast majority of cats, there is no recovering from being hit by a car. But this playful and affectionate youngster had many heroes step up to give him hope again. Augustus, like all cats, belongs safely indoors. Somewhere along the way though he was banished to outdoor living and, all too predictably, he was struck by a car and left to die in the street. A compassionate couple scooped him up and took him to a local veterinary hospital for care. They paid for x-rays, which revealed that his rear left leg snapped in half and shifted out of alignment. Repairing his leg required internal and external pins, and months of cage rest for healing. We agreed to his rescue and rehabilitation, thanks to the veterinary hospital reducing their fees to support his rescue, and thanks to one of our committed volunteers and supporters who paid most of his expenses. Augustus has recovered well enough that he debuted in Adoptions today. He has a slig...

Winnie

Update: Winnie was adopted on May 19th! Winnie is a precious little girl and ready for adoption today. Last month we rescued her at a local veterinary clinic. She was very ill with the parvo virus and her owner refused emergency medical treatment for her, which would have resulted in certain death. Thanks to donations from caring people, Nevada SPCA had that treatment provided for her, and after extensive medical care, she made a full recovery. Winnie is a jubilant, loving puppy. She is most likely a Boxer & Bully mix, spayed female, 3 months young. Please come meet this beautiful little survivor and make sure she remains safe and loved the rest of her life.

Can I trust you?

Update: Shirley was adopted on May 15th! This angel has seen the darkest side of human nature, and it has damaged her soul. But Shirley is a gentle spirit with a loving nature. She will bloom again. Recovering from extreme physical abuse and neglect can take months or years. She is on to a good start here, bonding with other dogs, receiving grooming care, and the tender touch of staff and volunteers who show her they love her. Today is very special for Shirley -- she has recovered to the point where she is ready for adoption. Her recovery must continue in her new home. A "big brother or sister" dog in the home may help tremendously, especially if he or she has a nurturing personality. Shirley is a Miniature Poodle mix, spayed female, approximately 4-5 years of age. Please budget extra for regular grooming. Please make sure Shirley only sees the better side of human nature from now on.

Conquering fear & learning to trust people again.

Update: Jay was adopted on May 14th! Jay is very much like the majority of dogs we rescue from other shelters. They are traumatized and confused by being rejected from their families, and sometimes they are needing to heal emotionally too from being hurt by those who they trusted. Jay was at another shelter, hiding and shaking in the back of his kennel. We knew with love, time, patience, and a steady routine, he would open his heart again and begin to trust us to care for him and ensure that he is adopted into a committed home. He is improving all the time, but like all of us, he remains a work in progress. He sure loves when the volunteers walk and play with him every day. Jay is great with other dogs. He is a uniquely handsome small mixed breed, perhaps with Spaniel & Terrier & Toy, approximately 2-3 years young. Helping him continue to emerge from his shell and become the best boy he can be will give you lifelong rewards and his whole-hearted devotion.
