Bunnies must have loving, forever homes too.

Westchester does not want to be an "Easter bunny" unless his new owner commits to him for life so that he is in a loving home for each and every Easter season.  He is a super cute Dwarf & English Spot mix rabbit, neutered, 18 months young, ready for adoption in Nevada SPCA's Lovebugs Room.  This fun portrait is courtesy of the wonderful people at Pet'ographique .  Westchester excels at playing and running in bunny tunnels and mazes. At the time of rescue, Westchester was roaming and starving around an apartment complex.

We are living beings, baby bunnies, not holiday gimmicks.

Randolph & Theda are baby bunnies who were apparently purchased from a breeder for Easter, but like countless others then discarded when the holiday novelty wore off.  They are now spayed/neutered, about 6 months of age, and ready for adoption as a bonded, lifelong pair.  Randolph is a blue-eyed Dwarf mix boy and Theda is a gorgeous Hot Tot girl.  Please ask for them by name in Nevada SPCA's Lovebugs Room.

I would be a terrific sister.

Such a gentle soul, Star is very endearing and a tender cuddler. She is a lovely Lop & American mix bunny, spayed, one year of age, with a sleek black coat and warm eyes. Star needed us when she was abandoned by her previous owner, apparently regarded as another "Easter bunny" rather than as a loving, social animal and family member. She relishes her daily salad greens and especially her shredded wheat snacks. We believe Star will bond well with another rabbit in need of a brother or sister.  Please bring your bunny to meet her in our Lovebug Room for a 'bunny date'.   (Note: Your rabbit will need to already be spayed or neutered too.)

Please do not mistake me for an "Easter bunny".

Update: Jackie-O was adopted on November 23rd! An elegant, refined lady, our staff named her Jackie-O after rescuing her from another shelter. She is a gorgeous English Spot mix, spayed, 2 years of age, shy at first but warm-hearted with gentle people she trusts. We believe Jackie-O may make a wonderful companion with a neutered male bunny or another spayed female.  If you have a rabbit (already spayed/neutered) who needs a friend, then please contact us and we'll have a "bunny date" in our new Lovebugs Room. We do not have much background on Jackie-O, but we are still seeing huge numbers of rabbits who were purchased at stores and from breeders before Easter losing their homes on a constant basis.  The gimmick of selling "Easter bunnies" results in countless homeless domesticated rabbits each year, because these temporary homes are doomed from the start.  Adoption is forever, so we seek only those willing and able to make lifetime commitments to compan...

Please cherish me and keep me safe.

Champlain is a baby boy with a bright future now that he has been rescued. He is very lovable, with many cute behaviors, curious and easy-going. Champlain is most likely an English Spot and Mini Lop mix rabbit. He is neutered and approximately 7-8 months of age. We rescued him from another shelter shortly, presumably surrendered there when the novelty of an "Easter bunny" wore off. Each summer we are inundated with rabbits rejected after being sold as Easter bunny gimmicks. Champlain is one of 90 rescued, spayed/neutered bunnies for adoption at Nevada SPCA. Please visit and ask for him by name.

I am a sweet, real girl, not a holiday gimmick.

Update: Oberon was adopted on August 9th! Petite, gentle Oberon was bred and sold as an "Easter bunny" like countless other rabbits. And like most of the others, she was tossed out shortly after the novelty of the holiday wore off. We now have 90 rescued rabbits for adoption. All are spayed/neutered and ready for lifelong, loving homes. Oberon is a Hot Tot mix, just a year of age. She has a tender demeanor and a quizzical nature, appreciative of her daily salad greens. We rescued Oberon from another shelter. Like all domesticated rabbits in our desert climate, she must have an indoor-only home for her comfort and survival.

I am seeking someone who will love me forever.

Update: The Great Gatsby was adopted on June 21st! The Great Gatsby is still a baby boy, but well on his way to developing into a charming, debonair adult. He is a Lionhead and Harlequin mix rabbit, neutered, about 8-10 months of age. The Great Gatsby was surrendered to us by his previous owner, who had purchased him at a pet store (presumably to be an "Easter bunny"). Like countless others sold for a quick buck as a holiday gimmick, he found himself in desperate need once the holiday passed. The Great Gatsby is friendly, cute as can be, and he has a gentle nature. He is one of 70 rescued, spayed/neutered rabbits for adoption today at Nevada SPCA. Please visit and ask for him by name.

I am a baby now, but will you still love me when I grow old?

Update: Simba was adopted on May 31st! Mistakenly thought of as a toy or a gimmick - "an Easter bunny" - baby Simba , like so many other rabbits, found himself homeless and in need shortly after the Easter holiday. He is a "kit" (a baby bunny), a Lionhead mix with beautiful hair and coloring. He is neutered and approximately 6 months of age. Simba loves to snuggle. He is outgoing and desires plenty of daily human contact. Please only consider him if you have plenty of time to spend with him each day. Simba is one of 70 rescued, spayed/neutered rabbits for adoption today at Nevada SPCA. Please visit and ask for him by name.

I was always so much more than a holiday toy or gimmick.

Much of our community's rabbit breeding crisis is due to the crass turning of a beautiful holiday into a means for a cheap buck. Rococco , and countless other bunnies like her each year, are bred and sold as "Easter Bunnies". Most end up abandoned in the desert, tossed out into parks, surrendered to shelters, or they are killed by neglect (often suffering first in extreme heat outdoors). Rococco is safe with us now and on her way to hopefully finding a loving, committed owner soon. She is spayed, an English Spot mix with lovely coloring and cute ears, about one year of age. Rococco is affectionate and enjoys people. She needs and deserves an owner who respects her as an individual being with a soul.

They apparently only wanted me for Easter.

Update: Humphrey was adopted on December 26th! The gimmick and novelty of an "Easter bunny" causes untold tragedy each year, as rabbits are purchased for the holiday and then discarded like old toys or video games. Humphrey was dangerously close to experiencing the fate of so many rabbits -- abandonment in the desert for a violent death from coyotes or birds of prey (or starvation, dehydration, trapping, more). Thankfully, this loving boy is safe with us and on the path to a secure, stable, committed lifetime home. Humphrey is a very handsome Mini Lop, neutered male, about one year of age. He is exceptionally friendly and enjoys being held and petted. Humphrey is one of almost 70 rescued, spayed/neutered bunnies for adoption today at Nevada SPCA.

I cannot comprehend why I was thrown out.

Update: Roosevelt was adopted on September 5th! Roosevelt is still a baby -- a "kit" -- approximately six months young. Did his owner really believe he could survive on his own in a park? Did she care? If not for a caring person who caught him, he would have become another of the countless victims who live and die for one holiday. As most of you know, this is a tragic pattern for so-called "Easter bunnies" each spring and summer. Purchased at swap meets or in parking lots as gimmicks or gifts for the holiday, they are then discarded in the months after Easter, peaking each summer. Most die of starvation or dehydration, become prey for coyotes or birds or dogs, or get struck by cars, or worse. Roosevelt is an adorable youngster who is well on his way to becoming a stately, handsome rabbit. He is an English Spot mix, neutered and ready for adoption. He loves being held and he enjoys people very much. Please come meet and adopt Roosevelt in Nevada SPCA's Rabbit ...

My happiness will come from peace-of-mind.

Update: Aphrodite was adopted on October 31st! Aphrodite is an outgoing youngster who is fortunate to still be alive. This gentle girl was being sold at a swap meet, just before Easter, to whoever, and for whatever purpose imaginable. Many end up as dinner for humans, or snakes, or encounter an even worse fate. Please alert animal control officials if you find a person selling animals at swap meets. Besides dogs and rabbits, we most often get reports of ducklings, other birds, and turtles in horrendous condition being sold for a quick buck. Oftentimes, officers can inspect the scenes and take action for the animals, plus put pressure on swap meet owners and managers to change policies and keep animals out of the markets. Aphrodite is an English Spot and Lop mix with expressive eyes. She is now spayed and micro-chipped, and ready for adoption. She is approximately 10 months of age. Please visit her and almost 70 more rescued and spay/neutered bunnies for adoption in Nevada SPCA's...

I just want to be safe and loved in a family.

Update: Buster Jr. was adopted on August 29th! The fall-out from Easter intensifies each summer, as we've pointed out repeatedly. Innocent bunnies become the victims of a holiday gimmick that wears off and they land, in mass, in shelters, parks, golf courses, and, most hopelessly, the desert. Buster Junior, an astonishingly cute Mini Lop rabbit, was in danger of his life ending before ever knowing the joy and peace of a loving home. He was mistaken as an "Easter bunny" and sold as a holiday gift, but was soon thereafter rejected and found himself on a deadline at another local shelter. We rescued Buster Junior from that shelter. He now awaits his forever home without fear of deadlines in Nevada SPCA's Rabbit & Guinea Pig Rescue Room. He is a neutered male, under a year of age. If you are new to caring for bunnies, but interested in learning more, please visit Brandi or Molina at Nevada SPCA for a starter information pack. They can introduce you to Buster Junior...

I would like to snuggle with you.

Update: Jett was adopted on July 22nd! Jett is a young loverboy bunny. He loves to be held and he adores people. He is a black Rex rabbit with silver marten coloring, neutered male, less than one year of age. We rescued Jett from another shelter where he ran out of time. He is one of more than 30 bunnies who we have rescued just since Easter! Despite all the progress we and others have made in trying to educate people about the needs of rabbits, we continue to see mass dumping of "Easter bunnies" each summer. You can meet and adopt Jett today in the Rabbit & Guinea Pig Rescue Room at Nevada SPCA.

Hansel and Gretel

Image
Update: Hansel & Gretel were adopted together on September 21st! These two young adults are a loving pair and they are bonded for life. They were mistaken for "Easter bunnies" and, therefore, were quickly discarded after the holiday. But the truth is they are domesticated, gentle beings who long to be members of a caring family. Hansel is a Harlequin, neutered male, and Gretel is a Dutch, spayed female. They are both approximately 18 months of age. They are 2 of 70 rabbits for adoption at Nevada SPCA (46 singles and 12 pairs of bonded mates). All are spayed/neutered and microchipped, with adoption fees of $35 per single and $50 per bonded pair. Besides meeting Hansel & Gretel in Nevada SPCA's Rabbit & Guinea Pig Rescue Room, please remember the other rescued species who all await loving forever homes too, including 50 gerbils, 9 guinea pigs, and 8 mice.

50 rescued bunnies for adoption.

Update: We now have 70 rabbits for adoption. Devyn & Daphne are still available. Devyn & Daphne, brother & sister, are two baby Dwarf mix bunnies. They are spayed/neutered and ready for adoption today. Please see Brandy or Yuri in our Rescued Rabbit & Guinea Pig Room for assistance. Rejected "Easter Bunnies" are coming to us on a daily basis already, and this tragic annual trend worsens in the summer season. We are now up to 50 rescued rabbits. Each need to live indoors with families who understand they are loving beings with feelings and needs, not toys or decorations or holiday gimmick gifts. If at all possible, remember to consider adopting a pair. Rabbits are social animals who usually thrive with a bonded mate.
